From Campus Radio to Island Wide Media
NCU Media

The history of the NCU Media Group dates back to the late 1990’s when then West Indies College acquired a community radio broadcast license. The station started operating as WIC Radio 88.3 FM in 1999, and served the campus and a small portion of the College community with a 100 watt transmitter. It offered a revolving playlist of gospel songs. That year, the College received University status and this small media entity was expected also to be the training ground for Mass Communication students as the institution sought to expand that media programme. In 2001, an application was put in to the Broadcasting Commission for an all-island commercial licence, which the University received in March 2009.

The radio station was then rebranded NCU FM. In November 2010, NCU FM expanded its reach Island-wide by commissioning two 4000 watt transmitters; one in Huntley, Manchester on the 91.1 FM band, and one in Coopers Hill, St Andrew on the 91.3 FM band. The station then went from limited hours of broadcast times to a 24-hour, 7-day radio format, complete with news, full-length programmes, and features. Over the period, NCU has experienced continuous growth in the Islands All Media Survey ranking at number 11 in 2012 of all the radio stations island-wide, to number 8 in 2014 and then number 7 in 2016. But radio was not the only area that received expansion. In an effort to showcase the work of the media students, NCU TV was born. The station went on air with Wilsons Cable in June 2005 and island wide on the FLOW network channel 188 on a 24-hour basis in December of 2009.
